Sometimes a serious sugar craving hits us so suddenly that the only way to curb it is to take a big bite into a wonderfully crunchy yet soft Belgian waffle topped with chocolate and strawberries, or to munch on a refreshing cup of ice cream, or delight in a flavorful French dessert. We recommend three new confectioneries around Budapest for one of “those days”, where there is nothing to feel guilty about succumbing to your deepest desire, and where you can explore the cute Japanese Kawaii style, try mouthwatering Thai-style ice creams, or indulge in flavorful and classic French desserts.

Chouchou is a small but professional store in Budapest’s District XIII, offering delicious French delights. The friendly owner, Kinga, works hard here upstairs in the confectionery, while her guests can enjoy the succulent sweets downstairs. A sympathetic story about this shop is that when Kinga started setting it up, there hadn’t yet been a similar parlor in the neighborhood. However, during the one-year reconstruction process, another confectionery, Édességlabor, opened just opposite from Chouchou. However, Kinga did not feel discouraged, but rather introduced herself, and together with the other owner decided to encourage people to frequent both hangouts.

Our favorites at Chouchou were the truly chocolatey passion-fruit torte, the glossy and beautifully presented chocolate dessert, the peanutty Paris Brest, the lavender macaron, and the salty caramel bonbon. We also liked the pecan pie, the lemon tart, and the not-exactly-French chocolate chip cookie that also sits in the counter alongside marzipan biscuits. There are also pretty little gift boxes at Chouchou that we can fill with macarons, bonbons, and truffles. We can indulge in sweet pleasures at Chouchou for as little as 200 forints, but a more serious sweet costs around 590 - 690 forints.

CutiePie

CutiePie, inspired by the super-cute Japanese Kawaii style, opened at Ferenc Boulevard 36 back in February. At this small green store we can choose among three types of sweets as a base: classic waffles, milk pies (the place’s specialty), and Belgian-style raised waffles. After making up our mind, we can enhance our base with all kinds of delicious decorations, from cottage-cheese cream through whipped cream, pudding, fruit sauce, peanut butter, Nutella, marmalade, and ice cream. Afterwards, we can decorate the top of this sweet tower with fruits and sprinkles – dried and candied fruits, nuts, milk caramel, oat biscuit, honey-biscuit bites, dragées, and candy. And if this still looks a bit bare to you, you can also add succulent strips of honey, chocolate, caramel, or cranberry sauce.

For lovers of savory flavors, CutiePie offers a specialty that is already highly popular abroad: folded pizza waffles stuffed with all the goods that we normally find on top of this tasty Italian treat. The drink assortment includes fruit turmixes (750 HUF/3dl); we recommend the mango, lychee, passion fruit, and kumquat flavors, and if we crave lighter delights we can try the creamy and twisted matcha tea ice cream. A waffle with topping, fruits, sprinkles, and a sauce costs around 1,000 forints.

N’iceroll (Closed)

N’iceroll sneaks new excitement into the lives of ice-cream lovers with special “rolled up” Thai-style treats. This small pastel-colored parlor at Radnóti Miklós Street 41 proffers various flavors of the Far Eastern frosty treat, which are also available in a lactose-free version made with coconut milk. When making these ice creams, the mixture is poured onto a metal plate kept well below freezing temperature. Then, fruits and other flavorful ingredients are added to the concoction, which quickly cools down and turns into ice cream. Afterwards, they smoothen it down, and then roll it up with a spatula into pretty wraps that go into our cups with toppings and sauces. Most of the toppings like brownie, salty caramel, and lemon cream are homemade, and altogether we can chose from ten flavors and three types: basic, super, and crunchy.
