WC Chicago Tribune, Friday, January 24, 1997 Section 2 5 2 plans may ease Lincoln Park parking woesf Nuns decide to let a lay board take over Academy of Our Lady recent proposal mirrors a plan; that has been talked about for! years. The proposed garage, which'2 would provide as many as 300 parking spaces, would be on Chi- cago Park District land now occu- pied by a metered parking lot "The Park District has seen the plan and is very supportive of it. And the mayor has seen it," Ber- nardini said. He said an unre- solved issue is the funding of the estimated $800,000 museum park- ing garage. By Jacquelyn Heard Tribune Staff Writer Faced with the growing problem of too few parking spaces in heavily traveled neighborhoods, Chicago officials are considering proposals to build parking garages serving a fitness center, a museum and a hotel in Lincoln Park.

According to Aid. Charles Ber-nardini (43rd), whose ward includes the busy Lincoln Park community, officials at the Chicago Historical Society, 1601 N. Clark want to build an underground parking garage on Clark Street and LaSalle Drive and officials at Lehmann Sports Club, 2700 N. Lehmann have pro posed building a 6-story garage on Lehmann. Under plans submitted to Ber-nardini's office, the fitness center would team with the nearby Comfort Inn, 601 W.

Diversey to finance construction of the garage. Bernardini said officials from the museum and the fitness center only recently began discussions with his office, and neither of the proposals has been put before the community for discussion. But Bernardini called the plans "feasible" because they come with assurances that the garages will be "economically viable" during the day. "I've been throughout this ward talking about parking and the idea of parking garages," said Bernardini, who recently has been considering whether to establish permit parking along Halsted Street in his ward. Residents want it Store owners don't "The problem is that most of the crowding in this area occurs at night and people aren't willing to support a parking garage unless there is a clear indication that there would be good use of it during the day," he said.

"These plans are really exciting because they come at a time when the city is faced with very serious parking problems." Chicago Historical Society officials could not be reached for comment. Bernardini said the museum's tuition dollars decline, Sarther said. The sisters have raised $105,000 from alumni and community contributions and hope to bring in $250,000 by the time the new board takes over, Sarther said. The academy also might get revenue from a lease with a charter school. The Chicago Public Schools' board has approved the Academy of Communications and Technology, a proposed kindergarten-through-12th-grade school that would be in a vacant part of Longwood.

The Illinois State Board of Education must still approve the charter school. The fitness center's proposed garage would include 173 parking spaces and replace an existing 45-space parking lot on Lehmann Court. Neither hotel nor fitness i i center officials could be reached i for comment. By Meg McSherry Breslin Tribune Staff Writer After 123 years, the religious order of the School Sisters of Notre Dame has decided it can no longer afford to run the Academy of Our Lady High School on the city's South Side. Faced with a $250,000 deficit, the sisters plan to turn the school over to a lay governing board by July, Sister Catherine Sarther, the order's provincial leader, said Thursday.

Sarther said she is confident the lay board will help keep the school alive. The new board is being formed and will include several nuns, alumni, parents and community leaders, she said. "We are very confident that the school will be continuing, and we're very committed to having it continue," she said. The Academy of Our Lady, also known as Longwood, opened in 1874 at 1309 W. 95th St.

as a boarding school for girls after Mother Aloysia Gonzaga bought the 5li-acre property for $5. The school boasts more than 10,000 alumni. Enrollment at Longwood reached a peak of 1,600 in the late 1960s, but declined in the late 1970s and reached a low of 175 this school year. Students in the Washington Heights neighborhood have struggled to afford the school's mounting tuition and fees, which reached $4,000 this year, Sarther said. When asked Thursday about the negotiations, Stroger said: "We hope and expect the members of the sanitarium district to carry forth the recommendations made Auction Held At: HOLIDAY INN (SKOKIE) 5300 VV. The clinic has piled up significant operating losses in the last two years. It is licensed for 193 beds, but has operated only about 80. About one-third of the beds are dedicated to a special unit operated by a consortium of Rush, MacNeal and the sanitarium district for patients requiring mechanical ventilation.

Last year, the clinic stopped accepting inpatients, except those needing the ventilator unit Officials at Rush and MacNeal confirmed that they are negotiating to lease the facility. "Our primary interest is secur-' ing a home for our ventilator support center," said MacNeal spokesman Dennis Ryan. Suburban Hospital was built in 1949, when the main treatment for patients with TB was rest and isolation. Antibiotics brought the disease under control, and state law was changed in 1973 to allow the hospital to offer additional medical services. TB re-emerged as a public safety concern in the mid-1980s.

But modern treatment emphasizes outpatient care, which the district provides at clinics in Harvey, Des Plaines and Forest Park. The bulk of the district's $3 million tax levy supports the clinics. But more than $260,000 is set aside each year to keep the hospital ready to care for tuberculosis patients. As the group climbed the bridge across Lake Shore Drive, large scattered snowflakes started fall ing. With a slight breeze from tto lake, the 22-degree temperature seemed "cooler near the lake," as the Chicago expression goes. "Everybody thinks we're crazy but it's really not bad once you're out here," said Amy Sypula, a senior environmental studies major. Hugo Sonnenschein, president of the university, strolled alongside students and faculty in the walk.

Dressed in winter sport gear from head to toe, he carried a wooden walking stick and spoke seriously of Kangeiko. "It's wonderful It's exciting. It's a tradition," Sonnenschein said. "We try to teach our students the role of tradition in our society." As the group neared the lake-front a few minutes before the 7:12 a.m. predicted sunrise, the sky began to lighten.

Facing toward Lake Michigan, the students formed a half-circle and began to bounce up and down. Levine, the former dean who now is a sociology professor, stood before the crowd to lead the calisthenics. The participants placed their hands together quietly and performed several yoga movements on the snow-dusted ground. They called for the sun, but it didn't respond. The sound of the cold, stiff tide lapping against ice-covered rocks drowned out their quiet murmurs.

With eyes trained to the east, the students briefly waited with anticipation. The sun didn't appear on Promontory Point Thursday morning. Without pause, Levine turned his attention to another natural wonder. "Oh, there comes a good wave," he said, pointing at the lake. Students didn't weather the frigid air any longer than necessary, tradition notwithstanding.

Some partook of complimentary doughnuts and hot chocolate. Others headed back to bed. "I'll be glad when next week comes," said Bill Stein, a junior biology-chemistry major, when tradition, no matter how invigorating, will revert to a good night's sleep.
