directions

  • -Using your hands, mix together beef, taco seasoning, and water.
  • -Brown the beef mixture in a skillet over medium-high heat for 5-6 minutes, using a wooden spoon or spatula to break up the meat as it cooks; set aside.
  • -In 375 degree oil, fry tortillas for 30-45 seconds per side, keeping as flat as possible and popping any bubbles that may form; drain on brown paper bags.
  • -Spread beans, then meat, then picante sauce/salsa over 4 of the tortillas; set aside.
  • -Spread cheese, then tomatoes, then onions over remaining tortillas; stack one of these tortillas on each of the others.
  • -Place pizzas under a hot broiler just until cheese has melted.
  • **** I usually just brown the burger and add the beans in with it.

  1. This is a great recipe I found after a complete failure trying to make something similar off the top of my head. My changes were to use 1/4 lb ground turkey cooked in a skillet along with 1/4 cup onions and 1/4 cup green peppers then 1/3 cup medium salsa. With a spray bottle mixture of water and peanut oil, I sprayed both sides of corn tortillas and placed them in a 2nd hot skillet to crisp / fry. Using homemade refried beans (no salt added) I then did a layered Tortilla - refried beans - meat mixture - tortilla - shredded cheddar jack. Put under broiler for 3 minutes till cheese was lovely and melted, then added shredded lettuce and diced Roma tomatoes. Served with sour cream in a small dish on the side. SO DELICIOUS! 2. This does not taste like Mexican Pizza from Taco Bell if that’s even what they were going for. I can’t tell. Here’s a secret. Taco Bell’s shells are pre made of the same consistency as a taco salad bowl but flat. If you can find that somewhere in a grocery store or Mexican market, you are golden.

  5. This is a tasty dish. I just mixed the water, taco seasoning, and ground beef in the skillet as it was browning. I did add about another 1/4 cup of water. I was a bit impatient waiting for the oil to warm up so my first 2 tortillas were not as crunchy as I would have liked, however it did not detract from the outcome. Thanks for sharing!

Tweaks

  1. I can not count how many of these I made working at Taco Bell years ago and I did not like them. Theirs they added a spice pack that had tomato powder, some Italian and Mexican seasoning to their watery salsa for the sauce. Re fried beans, taco meat, "pizza sauce" on tostadas, topped with more sauce, 3 cheese blend, tomatoes, and green onions (when they had them). Then placed in a steamer to melt the cheese. While this may be tasty, it is nowhere near authentic

  2. Remove the tortillas from the paper bag. Place them on a cookie sheet, then stick them in the oven.

  3. Awesome recipe. Just needed to make a few tweaks. I don't keep taco seasoning at home, so instead I added: 1 chopped up small onion started frying it in 1 tbsp oil added the meat , got it going on the heat then added 4 tbsp Chili powder 1/2 tbsp crushed oregano 1 tsp ground coriander seeds black pepper salt/ celery salt to taste. about 1/2 tsp kept frying and mixing the meat then added 6 cloves of pressed garlic fried it 2 minutes to incorporate then added 1 cup of hot salsa (can use mild instead) optional: hot chili flakes or cayenne pepper (we like it hot) worked on the mixture so that there are no big lumps of meat left. cooked it covered for about 40 minutes adding a bit of water half way through, then let it all evaporate it all by the end... Much tastier taco meat! oh and the 375F oil is a bit hot for the tortillas. started browning too fast. next time ill try 325-330F i also used less refried beans and no additional salsa or taco sauce as the added cup was perfect. used a bit more tomatoes on the top than the original... turned out amazing and even my fussy 10 yr old ate a whole pizza in record time! cheers!

  4. I use homemade chorizo mixed w/ the refried beans.

  5. Very good quick and easy recipe. I used left over kidney beans in place of refried beans and I wouldn't do that again as it made it difficult to eat. It is very filling and I made two and we each ate half and still have one to go.
