Police have begun dismantling a pro-Palestinian encampment at Wayne State University in Detroit two days after the school suspended in-person classes and encouraged staff to work remotely

  • AP

DETROIT (AP) — Police began dismantling a pro-Palestinian encampment Thursday at Wayne State University in Detroit, two days after the school suspended in-person classes and encouraged staff to work remotely to avoid any problems with the protesters' encampment.

Television footage showed campus police and Detroit police officers in riot gear tearing down fencing before they removed the protesters and started breaking down tents erected last week on green space near Wayne State’s undergraduate library.

WHO member countries approve steps to bolster health regulations to better brace for pandemics

  • AP

The World Health Organization says member countries approved new steps to boost global preparedness for pandemics like COVID-19 and mpox and better respond to dangerous outbreaks. WHO said Saturday that countries agreed to amend the International Health Regulations such as by defining a “pandemic emergency” and helping developing countries better access financing and medical products. The IHR was adopted in 2005. The new agreement came as the U.N. agency wrapped up its six-day World Health Assembly this year. Plans to adopt a more sweeping pandemic “treaty” at the meeting have been shelved. They were abandoned largely over disagreements between developing countries and richer ones about better sharing of technology and the pathogens that trigger outbreaks.

It's been even longer for the franchise with five Cup titles. The Oilers will be home Sunday night with a chance to wrap up the Western Conference final in Game 6 against top-seeded Dallas. The Oilers were in the middle of a span of 10 consecutive seasons without making the playoffs when Nugent-Hopkins was drafted; their last Stanley Cup Final was 2006. A 23-acre farm located amid lush green meadows and stands of pine is where Elaine Heath, an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and a former dean of the Duke Divinity School, started a new monastic community known as the Church at Spring Forest. The farm cultivates three acres of fruits and vegetables but is also organized as a faith community, with four families living on site and others remotely. Its larger mission is to support refugee resettlement and provide outdoor retreats for the larger community. It is sometimes called a “farmastery,” a farm and monastery.

Disruptions at University of Chicago graduation as school withholds 4 diplomas over protests

  • By SOPHIA TAREEN - Associated Press

A crowd of students protesting the war in Gaza walked out of the University of Chicago’s commencement. And the school is withholding the diplomas of four seniors over their involvement with a pro-Palestinian encampment that was cleared last month. The disruption to the rainy two-hour ceremony was brief, with calls to “Stop Genocide.” Dozens walked out in between speeches. Four seniors were informed by email in recent days that their degrees would be withheld pending a school disciplinary process related to involvement complaints about the encampment. University officials say the students were still allowed to participate in commencement but their degrees are being withheld pending further review.
