Express condolences at ajc.comobits LING, Brian Dr Brian Nathan Ling, known locally as a devoted physician and nationally as a leading nephrologist, died at Mission Hospital Friday morning, March 10, 2006. Soft spoken, with a dry wit, a deadpan delivery and a twinkle in his eye, Brian Ling was so modest that few knew how significant and varied his accomplishments were for a man who lived only 50 years; he enjoyed the profound respect of his peers, the gratitude of the many patients whose lives he touched, the adoration of his cherished young daughter and the love of his family and friends. Brian was born in Los Angeles and shared a happy childhood with his sister Cindy and brother Craig. He received his undergraduate degree from UCLA in 1978. Following in the footsteps of his father, Dr.

Shun Ling, Brian decided on a medical career. He graduated from Emory Medical School in 1982, serving his residency there until 1985. His mother, Amy was deservedly proud when he became an Associate Professor at Emory in the Renal Department and served with distinction in that capacity from 1989 until 1997 when he moved his family to Asheville to enter private practice. A highly respected kidney researcher and physician, his patients knew him for his compassion, gentle bedside manner, and selfless dedication. His partners appreciated how hard and intensely Brian worked for good patient care.

Humble and self-deprecating, Brian never spoke of the numerous awards he received for excellence in his field. The measure of Brian's life was significantly more than the sum of his professional accomplishments. While he and his wife, Lauren were officially divorced in 2005 after 1 4 years of marriage, they remained close, growing into devoted and affectionate friends and continuing to focus on being extraordinary parents. Attentive and affectionate with his 10-year-old daughter Logan, Brian was wholeheartedly engaged in her life. He loved skiing with her, reveled in her talent and passion for dance, and was intent that she know how much he treasured her.

He leaves behind many heartbroken friends and associates, who will prize the memories, the laughter, the gifts, and the lessons bequeathed by a man whose generosity of spirit made him so beloved. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Sunday, March 12th at Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue. A Memorial service will be held at 11 :00 AM, Monday, March 13th at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Reverend William Whisenhunt officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dr. Brian Ling Memorial Fund in care of Boys Arnold PO Box 5255, Asheville, N.C., 28813.
