Scattered showers tease state thirsting for rain By DAWN DAWSON State Staff Writer South Carolina's best chance for some relief from the springtime dry spell zipped across the state Wednesday afternoon with only a scattered shower here and there.

A 70 percent chance of thunderstorms was forecast as a cold front that had spawned tornadoes in the Midwest moved eastward. The strength of the front prompted tornado watches for much of the day in Georgia, North Carolina and most of the central and coastal portions of South Carolina. By 7:48 p.m., however, when meteorologists realized there was little threat of violent weather, the watches were canceled. A tornado watch alerts the public to the possibility of a tornado. The front swept through on blustery winds, but the black clouds failed to release more than brief, sometimes heavy, showers.

Some golf ball-size hail was spotted four miles north of Walterboro, but no damage was reported. High winds during the late afternoon knocked down trees along secondary roads in Beaufort and Jasper counties, said dispatcher Ann Brubaker of the Jasper office of the S.C. Highway Patrol. She said traffic was stalled on the secondary roads for short periods. A total of 0.17 of an inch of rain fell at Columbia Metropolitan Airport, according to the National Weather Service office.

Charleston's weather service office reported 0.06 inches. Weather officials had been hoping precipitation ahead of the front would ease the state's rainfall deficit. From Jan. 1 through Sunday, only 8.10 inches of rain fell in Columbia, nearly 6 inches less than the average precipitation. Figures for the GreenvilleSpartanburg area and Charleston also are running about 6 inches below normal, according to the S.C.

Water Resources Commission. The front managed to put a kink in this week's 80-degree temperatures. Today's highs are not expected to get out of the low 60s, and the mercury will stay in that range until Sunday, said Chuck Little, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Columbia. Lows for the period should be in the 40s. Winds gusting up to 25 mph are expected to prevail until sometime Friday.

What little rain that did fall helped settle the pollen. But Dr. William Howland, a Columbia allergist who helps monitor the pollen index, said that could be a mixed blessing. "It's only a temporary respite. The rain will stimulate plants to produce more pollen and encourage mold and mildew to grow.

So, in a few days, we'll have all that pollen back," Howland said. Funeral Announcements Mrs. Cartin-Funeral services for Mrs. Lorena Cartin will be held at 3 o'clock THIS (THURSDAY) AFTERNOON in the Swansea Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
