I originally created this super easy vegan dill dip to go with my buffalo tofu wings, but it was too delicious to just use for one recipe. It's a delicious dip for veggies and makes a great salad dressing, too!

Conventional dill dip uses sour cream and mayo. For this vegan version, I'm using tahini as the base. Tahini is a sesame seed paste, so not only is this veggie dip dairy-free, it's nut-free, too!

If you can't do tahini, no problem! Just replace the tahini and water with a cup of vegan sour cream and ¾ cup vegan mayo. Add lemon juice to taste, since the sour cream will have varying amounts of tang.

✓ Ingredients and substitutions

  • tahini - This is the base for your dip. Make sure you stir your tahini well before measuring it for the best results. See the recipe card for a substitution option, if you have a sesame allergy.
  • dried dill - You can use double the amount of fresh dill, if you prefer. Don't put the fresh dill in the blender, though, because it will turn the whole thing green! Just mince it up and stir it in at the end.
  • agave nectar - If your tahini is bitter, adding a little agave will offset that.
  • onion powder - For umami powder!
  • water - To thin out the tahini. You may need extra water, depending on how thick your tahini is and what consistency you want your dill dip to be.
  • lemon juice - Adds such a nice tang!
  • garlic - Fresh garlic gives you a little zing and lots of umami! If you don't want to deal with whole cloves, you can use 1 teaspoon garlic powder instead.
  • salt - Brings out all of the flavors.

🥣 How to make vegan dill dip

Combine all of the ingredients in your blender. Puree until smooth, adding more water by the tablespoon, as needed, to get things moving.

Taste and adjust seasoning, blending in between additions. Depending on how fresh your spices are, you may need to add more dill and onion powder. For more tang, add lemon juice by the tablespoon. If it's too thick, add more water or lemon juice, and if it's too thin, add more tahini.

💡 Helpful tips

  • Please do be sure to stir your tahini before measuring it out! Tahini separates, so if you don't stir, your vegan dill dip will be more like vegan dill water. 😆
  • This dip thickens as it chills. If you're making this ahead as a salad dressing, I recommend thinning it out a bit more than you actually want, so it will be the perfect thickness after chilling. You can also just whisk in some water after chilling to get that perfect dill salad dressing consistency.

🫙 Storage directions

Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep for five to seven days this way.

💬 Frequently asked questions

Why is my dip so thin?

If it's extremely watery, chances are you didn't stir your tahini well. Tahini separates, so if you don't stir, you're really just adding oil and leaving the solids behind.

Tahini can also vary in thickness from brand to brand, as well.

If your dip is just a bit thinner than you like, that's ok! Just add more tahini, blending in between additions, until you reach your desired thickness.

What can I use instead of tahini?

You can use a combination of vegan sour cream and vegan mayo instead. See the recipe notes for details.
