Who can benefit from Laser Whitening?
Laser Teeth Whitening is hugely popular in our Cardiff practice, but it isn’t suitable for everyone.
We’ll discuss the procedure, and assess your suitability at your consultation with us to determine if it’s the right whitening process for you and your teeth, and your goals and expectations.
Some things to consider:
– Teeth that have crowns, fillings, veneers, or other dental work cannot have their colour changed by whitening.
– It’s important to have excellent general oral health before undergoing any whitening. We’ll assess this first, but even if you have superb teeth, those who experience sensitivity or gum disease may find the procedure a little uncomfortable.
– It is advised for pregnant women to not undergo teeth whitening.
– Those under 18 are advised to not have teeth whitening, as the teeth are still changing and developing.
– Intrinsic stains such as those caused by medications like tetracycline may not respond as well as expected to whitening procedures.

Laser teeth whitening can last for many years, depending on the condition of your teeth and the desired shade. Good aftercare including regular dental checkups, avoiding certain staining foods and drinks, as well as not smoking can help to prolong the effects of laser whitening. Initial consultation
After getting to know a little about you and your expectations from whitening we’ll discuss the options available to you. We will also give you a thorough assessment of your general dental/gum health and recommend any treatment to get your mouth ready for whiter teeth.
Cleaning
Before starting the whitening process, we may recommend a hygienist visit to clean your teeth to remove any plaque, tartar, or surface stains. We’ll need your teeth clean to ensure the best results. We will then scan your teeth and gums so the dental laboratory can manufacture your custom fitting whitening trays.
Shade assessment
Using a colour grading chart, we’ll take a snapshot of your current shade. We’ll take some before photos so you can see the improvement.
Protection
To shield your gums and soft tissues from the whitening gel and laser, we’ll add a protective barrier or a rubber dam around the teeth. This helps minimise irritation of your gums from the whitening materials
Whitening
We’ll apply the gel which whitens your teeth. These are generally hydrogen peroxide based, and break down stains and discolouration.
Laser whitening
We’ll shine a specialised laser at the gel on your teeth. This activates the whitening compound, enhancing the process and the whitening. It doesn’t cause pain.
Gel removal
The whitening gel is removed and your mouth is rinsed to remove any residue. We’ll assess the new colour of your teeth, and now you can check out your new smile before heading home to finish the treatment at your own leisure.

At-home Teeth Whitening Kits
This is our most popular whitening treatment and comes with 8 syringes of 6% hydrogen peroxide and custom fitting whitening trays. This is great for those who don’t mind doing the whole treatment at home and also want to save a few pounds. Results are similar to Phillips Zoom laser whitening but take a little longer.
Enlighten Teeth Whitening
Enlighten guarantees a Vita shade B1 for your teeth, a super but subtle white colour. It’s great for those with sensitive teeth as it works directly through your teeth enamel and does not harm the surface of the tooth. Patients love it because they can continue eating and drinking their favourite foods while under treatment. The Enlighten Evo4 system is considered to be the best available in the UK.

How effective is Laser Whitening?
Whether you’re coming to us looking for dazzling white, or just a slight increase in brightness, laser whitening can be very effective in brightening up the colour of your teeth.
It’s a quick procedure and can be completed in under one hour, but the impact of your laser whitening will depend on a few factors:
Original tooth colour
Depending on the level of staining, the maximum achievable colour might be more or less than you expect.
Type of staining
Some stains persist more than others, and won’t be as affected by whitening, for example, those caused by medications or injury can be harder to shift than those caused by foods and drinks.
Lifestyle & habits
Maintaining the colour of your teeth is often up to you and your lifestyle. Things like smoking, drinking red wine, and generally poor dental hygiene will reduce the impact of your whitening.
That said, laser whitening is a fast and effective procedure, and many patients see an impact of up to eight shades lighter in just an hour. We’ll chat you through your options and expectations at your consultation.

We carry out hundreds of these each year, using the latest medical guidance. However, like any dental or medical procedure, there can be potential risks or side effects.
The most common of these is increased sensitivity or slight gum irritation immediately following treatment. The good news is this is usually temporary and subsides after a day or so.
Teeth whitening has boomed in popularity and while it’s more accessible than ever, this has led to it being sold by untrained medical professionals, often with high concentrations of whitening agents. The low cost of internet sites might make them tempting, but our advice here is to always use a dentist you’re comfortable with, who is sufficiently trained and qualified to provide whitening treatments using medically graded and sanctioned materials.
Maintaining and caring for your teeth after Laser Whitening
Once you’ve had your laser teeth whitening, you’ll no doubt want to keep beaming for as long as possible! With that in mind, there are a few things you can do to extend the whiteness of your teeth:
Maintaining brushing, flossing, and mouth washing
As you should anyway – brush teeth twice a day as well as flossing, possibly using a whitening toothpaste. We often find many patients are so happy with their new smile, they can’t stop brushing their teeth anyway!
Regular dental checks
See your dentist regularly to ensure overall oral health and hygiene is strong, and perhaps have a scale and polish where necessary.
Avoiding staining foods and drinks
co*ke, coffee, red wine, and some foods like berries can stain your teeth and should be minimised where possible to extend the length of time your teeth are super fresh. Some patients opt to use a straw to keep dark liquids away from their teeth. Diet is incredibly important, so avoiding sugar where possible will help to keep your teeth whiter for longer.
Avoiding smoking
Smoking causes discolouration of all teeth and should be avoided.
Touch-up treatments
Depending on your whitening and the level of staining, touch-up treatments might help to keep your teeth as white as possible.
